Any of these recipes can have most ingredients substituted depending on cost, availability, allergies or preferences. If you use dried instead of fresh herbs be sure to rub them between your hands or roll them before adding to help release the essential oils and give more flavor, and only use a third of the amount. Each recipe serves 6 and can be adjusted up or down.

Meals on the Go
Hearth-Baked Pocket Pies
Flaky, golden pastry pockets stuffed with savory seasoned beef and root vegetables. Simple, filling, and completely mess-free.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets refrigerated pie crust
- 1/2 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion of your choice (I typically choose sweet onions for most things), finely diced
- 1 small carrot, finely diced
- 1 small Yukon gold potato, finely diced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
Directions
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion, carrot, and potato for 6–8 minutes until softened. (It’s important they’re all diced at this point, otherwise they won’t cook at the same time.)
- Add ground beef, thyme, salt, and pepper; cook until browned. Let cool.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Cut dough into six 5-inch circles. Place 2 tablespoons of filling on one side of each circle, fold over, crimp edges with a fork, and cut a small ‘X’ on top.
- Brush with egg wash and bake for 18–20 minutes until golden brown.
- Feel free to top with a bit of thyme, rosemary and salt for a vendor’s signature snack.
Charred Fire-Spice Skewers

Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs (cut into 1-inch cubes)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper (you can really use any ground pepper, I prefer Ancho)
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 6 wooden skewers (soaked in water for 20 minutes, which prevents them from burning)
Directions
- Whisk olive oil, paprika, cumin, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
- Toss chicken pieces in the marinade, then thread evenly onto the 6 soaked skewers.
- Heat a grill pan or outdoor grill to high heat.
- Cook skewers for 4–5 minutes per side until charred and internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
- Serve straight on the skewer.
Chef’s Tip: Want to make this more hearty or colorful? Add some chunks of bell pepper, onion, and zucchini halfway through.
Flatbread Wraps
Warm, soft flatbreads rolled around spiced meat and roasted vegetables — quick to assemble, easy to carry, and perfect for walking the Market Square while haggling over magical trinkets.
Chef’s Note: This one looks like a lot of steps, but it’s super easy. We’re just cooking the meat and veggies separately to prevent cross-contamination.
Ingredients
- Spiced Chicken
- 6 premade flatbreads (naan, pita, or soft flour flatbreads all work great)
- 1 lb chicken, chopped or shredded (a few cans of chicken work too, they’re pre-cooked and just need to be browned)
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Roasted Veg Mix
- 1 cup diced bell pepper
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 1/2 cup diced mushrooms
- 1 cup diced zucchini
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Market Herb Sauce
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp chopped, fresh herbs (You can use dill, thyme, rosemary, or mint)
- 1 pinch of salt
Directions
- Spiced Chicken
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add chopped chicken, paprika, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Cook 6–8 minutes until browned and cooked through (or heated through if using pre-cooked chicken).
- Chop or shred finer if needed — smaller pieces make cleaner wraps.
- Roasted Veg Mix
- Toss diced vegetables with olive oil, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Roast at 425°F (220°C) for 15–20 minutes until tender and lightly charred. Toss halfway through.
- Let cool slightly before assembling.
- Market Herb Sauce
- Stir yogurt, lemon juice, herbs, and salt together.
- Chill before serving.
Bazaar Sausage Rolls
Savory spiced pork sausage wrapped tightly in flaky puff pastry and baked into crisp, handheld rolls.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed)
- 1 lb ground pork sausage
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs, croutons, or crushed flaky corn cereal
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp dried sage
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Stone ground or smooth Dijon mustard.
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix ground sausage, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, sage, and salt in a bowl.
- Unroll puff pastry and slice lengthwise into two long strips.
- Divide sausage mixture into two long logs and place one down the center of each pastry strip. The easiest way to do this is with some clear plastic wrap, and roll it into an even shape.
- Brush edges with egg wash, roll pastry tightly over the sausage to enclose it, and cut each log into 3 equal rolls (6 total).
- Brush tops with egg wash and bake for 22–25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve with a drizzle of mustard, or if you’re feeling frisky, incorporate the mustard into the sausage mix.

Final Thoughts
Street food is one of the easiest ways to bring a fantasy setting to life, whether you’re setting the scene for an urban chase through a crowded night market or looking for mess-free snacks that won’t ruin anyone’s dice or character sheets. The best part about these recipes is that they can all be prepped ahead of time, leaving you free to focus on the game once your players arrive. Pack them in paper cones, serve them on simple wooden boards, or hand them out as in-game rewards when the party stops at a local stall.
