I love cooking, and I love gaming, so bringing them together tickles me pink. This new series, Dinner & Dice, will feature simple, affordable recipes and ideas to help you craft and run RPG-themed dinner party sessions for your players. Each post will feature a theme…Elven, Dwarven, Tavern, Royal Hall, and some from our own campaign, where food played a central role at certain times.
One of the things I love about tabletop gaming the most is the setting and imagination in each campaign, session, setting, and how lively they can be. Groups get together each week to play D&D, Pathfinder, and any number of other TTRPGs and spend time together adventuring, solving problems, and developing their characters. There’s usually snacks and drinks, but how much more immersive can you get than a themed dinner party once in a while for your sessions?
We have a lot of plans for this series, but our first post is just in time for Summer, an Elven Grove themed setting, complete with light, delicious meals, sides, snacks, and drinks to bring your campaign session alive whether it’s indoors or outdoors!
Any of these recipes can have most ingredients substituted depending on cost, availability, allergies or preferences. If you use dried instead of fresh herbs be sure to rub them between your hands or roll them before adding to help release the essential oils and give more flavor, and only use a third of the amount. Each recipe serves 6 and can be adjusted up or down.
Appetizers & Sides
Orange and Herb Salad
Ingredients: 10 oz mixed greens; 3 oranges, peeled and segmented; 1 cup toasted walnuts; ¼ cup olive oil; 2 tbsp lemon juice (I agree with Ina Garten, fresh is best); 1 tsp honey; 2 tbsp chopped parsley; salt & pepper to taste.
Directions: Whisk oil, lemon, honey, salt, and pepper together in a serving bowl. Toss with greens, orange segments, walnuts, and parsley. Serve chilled.
Garlic Butter Roasted Root Vegetables
Ingredients: 2 lb mixed carrots, parsnips, beets, radishes, etc. (1” pieces); 4 tbsp olive oil; 4 tbsp melted butter; 4 cloves garlic, minced; 1 tsp salt; ½ tsp pepper; 2 tbsp chopped parsley; 1 splash of red wine.
Directions: Toss veg with oil, butter, garlic, splash of red wine, salt, and pepper. Roast at 400°F for 25–30 minutes until tender. Finish with a dusting of parsley and serve.
Warm Herbed Olives
Ingredients: 3 cups mixed olives (these can be Spanish, Queen, or stuffed, but they should be whole); 2 tbsp olive oil; zest of 1 lemon; 2 sprigs fresh rosemary; 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional).
Directions: Warm oil in skillet, add olives, lemon zest, rosemary, and pepper flakes; heat 3–5 minutes turning frequently, and serve warm.
Main Dishes
Lore says most Elven kind are vegetarians, yes, but our players aren’t. Modify the recipes to adjust your level of immersion!
Citrus Herb Salmon Packets
Ingredients: 6 × 5–6 oz salmon fillets (or 3 cans, 14 oz each drained); 3 lemons (sliced); ½ cup chopped parsley; ¼ cup chopped dill; 3 tbsp olive oil; 1 tsp salt; ½ tsp black pepper; 6 sheets aluminum foil.
Directions: Preheat oven to 400°F. Place each fillet on a foil sheet, top with lemon slices, parsley, dill, drizzle with olive oil, season. Seal each of the packets and bake 12–15 minutes (canned salmon: heat 8–10 minutes). Open the tops carefully, roll them back, and serve in the foil.
Herbed Lemon Flatbread with Whipped Feta
Ingredients: 6 store‑bought flatbreads; 16 oz feta; 3 tbsp olive oil; zest of 2 lemons; 2 tbsp honey; 2 tbsp chopped rosemary; 2 tbsp chopped thyme; salt and pepper (mixed together) to taste.
Directions: Preheat oven to 425°F. Warm flatbreads 6–8 minutes until crisp. Blend feta with 1 tbsp olive oil and lemon zest until smooth. Spread whipped feta on flatbreads, drizzle honey, sprinkle herbs and a pinch of salt and pepper. Slice into strips and serve warm.
Chef’s Tip: To make this even heartier, put some of the salmon from the recipe above or some sun-dried tomatoes on top for even more flavor!
Roast Chicken with Citrus and Herbs
Ingredients: 6 bone‑in chicken thighs (about 4–5 lb); ½ cup olive oil; juice and zest of 2 lemons; 4 cloves garlic minced; 3 tbsp chopped rosemary; 2 tbsp chopped thyme; 1 tsp salt; ½ tsp pepper.
Directions: Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss chicken with oil, lemon, garlic, herbs, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Arrange skin‑side up on a baking sheet and roast 30–35 minutes until internal temp is 165°F and skin is golden. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
Snacks
Honeyed Almonds
Ingredients: 3 cups raw almonds; 3 tbsp honey; 1 tbsp olive oil; 1 tsp sea salt.
Directions: Toss almonds with honey and oil in a bowl; spread on baking sheet in a single layer; roast 8–10 minutes at 350°F; cool and sprinkle salt. Serve warm.
Herb Cheese Crostini
Ingredients: 1 baguette, sliced (about 24 slices); 12 oz soft herb cheese (this could be whipped feta, warmed cream cheese with herbs added, goat cheese, etc); 2 tbsp chopped chives.
Directions: Toast baguette slices at 375°F 6–8 minutes; spread cheese and top with a sprinkle of chives.
Mushroom Pâté on Crackers
Ingredients: 16 oz mushrooms; 4 oz cream cheese; 2 tbsp olive oil; 1 clove garlic; 1 tsp thyme; salt & pepper; crackers.
Directions: Sauté mushrooms and garlic in oil until soft, moving frequently so they don’t burn; blend with cream cheese and thyme until spreadable; season and serve on crackers, crostini, or toasted bread.
Chef’s Note: Want to make this non-vegetarian? Take a few chicken thighs from the recipe above and blend it into a warm pâté!
Drinks
Elderflower Spritz
Ingredients: 1 cup elderflower cordial or elderflower wine/mead; 4 cups sparkling water; 1 lemon sliced; ice.
Directions: Combine cordial, wine, or mead and sparkling water over ice; garnish with lemon.
Warm Spiced Tea
Ingredients: 6 cups brewed black or herbal tea; 2 cinnamon sticks; 2 strips orange peel; honey to taste.
Directions: Warm tea with spices 5–7 minutes; sweeten with honey and serve warm.
Citrus Mint Cooler
Ingredients: 1 cup fresh mint leaves; 1 cup fresh lime juice; ½ cup simple syrup (This is super easy to make, combine equal parts sugar and water and heat until syrupy); 4 cups sparkling water; ice.
Directions: Muddle mint with lime and syrup, strain into a pitcher or bowl, and add sparkling water and ice.
Ambience
This menu is perfect for an outdoor Summer session, but we’re not done yet. Here are some suggestions for the setting and ambience.
- Use tall, tapered candles for an elegant look
- Hang fairy lights woven through greenery for a dappled, woodland light
- Play soft harp, flute, or ambient forest scape playlists on loop
- Use a rosemary and citrus fragrance spray or burn citrusy or light herby incense
- Place herb and plant-filled jars or small containers around your space to create an apothecary feel
- Use leaf-marked place cards to welcome your honored guests
- If you have indoor plants, set them around your play space temporarily
Final Thoughts
Whether your group is deep in the woods chasing fae rumors or simply enjoying a quiet evening between adventures, this setting reminds us that the magic of the game doesn’t end when the dice stop rolling. It lives in the laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the way a simple meal can feel like part of the world you’ve built together.
So light the candles, pour the spritz, and let the grove come alive — because every campaign deserves a feast worthy of its heroes.
